San Fran Day 4 (Part II)

After seeing it on postcards my entire life, I finally experienced the Golden Gate Bridge up close and personal today. The bridge is technically Highway 101 North, which links San Francisco and Marin County, Calif. The bridge was built in 1937, a feat some considered impossible because of the area's foggy weather, 60-mph winds and strong ocean currents. I'm told the two main cables contain enough steel wire (80,000 miles) to encircle the equator three times. And the concrete poured into its piers and anchorages would pave a 5-foot-wide sidewalk from New York to San Francisco. Oh, and I also learned the color of the bridge: International Orange.

A few random sightings on the way to Coit Tower and city hall.

San Fran Day 3

Sunday involved a trip to the southern parts of town, seen in the first two images, followed by a ferry ride out to Alcatraz, the famous federal prison known as "The Rock."

Day 2 in San Fran

So on my first full day of exploring San Francisco on Saturday, I quickly found out how hard it's going to be to only post seven photos a day, but I'm sticking to the limit I've placed on myself. I don't think these are necessarily the seven best photos I took, but they're seven singles that can stand alone. I have a few photo stories developing that maybe I'll save for later.

Seven By Seven in San Francisco

I'm in San Francisco for a short while and, while I don't plan to spend a lot of time writing about my trip while I'm here, I am making a pledge to post seven blog entries — with seven photos each – in honor of the city that measures seven miles by seven mies. Enjoy the first installment.

I'm staying in the Hotel Mark Twain, in the heart of San Fran, where the windows in the hotel staircase are adorned with clever quotes from the writer. Like this one.

Welcome to the Hotel California, down the street from my hotel.

My travel companion and I enjoyed gourmet vegan food at Millennium. I had the tamale.

The chef's corner.

The lobby of Millennium/Hotel California.

The writing on the wall.

They apparently ship wine.
