The Ann Arbor Police Department and Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office are officially merging police dispatch operations starting in March. Police Chief Barnett Jones, left, and Sheriff Jerry Clayton, right, appeared before Ann Arbor City Council members Monday night to talk about what the consolidation means for both parties. Barnett Jones came to Ann Arbor in June 2006 with 30 years of law enforcement experience, beginning as a Wayne County sheriff’s deputy and also working for the Inkster Police Department and Oakland County Sheriff’s Department before becoming the police chief in Sterling Heights. In Ann Arbor, he oversees a department that has continued to face tough budget cuts.

Not Forgotten

About 70 people gathered along Fifth Avenue between Ann Arbor's city hall and the downtown fire station today for a ceremony paying respect to the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives exactly 10 years ago on 9/11. "All across this nation and all around this world, let them see we're still standing together," Police Chief Barnett Jones said as the crowd joined hands. "Let them know that they can never take away our freedom, they can never take our lifestyle, they can never take away what is America." Read the story.
